Where antardasha sits in the dasha system
The Vimshottari dasha system divides life into nine mahadashas, one per graha, spanning 120 years in a fixed sequence. Each mahadasha is subdivided into nine antardashas (also called bhuktis), running in the same planetary order and proportioned to each graha’s period length. So at any moment you are inside two nested periods at once: the mahadasha lord sets the chapter’s broad theme, and the antardasha lord colours the current pages of that chapter. A Saturn mahadasha with a Venus antardasha reads very differently from the same Saturn mahadasha under a Mars antardasha.
How to read an antardasha
Read the antardasha lord the same way you would read any graha: its sign, house, dignity, the houses it rules from the lagna, and its relationship to the mahadasha lord. Classical reading weighs whether the two lords are friends, enemies, or neutral, and whether the antardasha lord supports or contradicts the mahadasha’s agenda. An antardasha of a well-placed yogakaraka can brighten an otherwise heavy mahadasha; an afflicted antardasha lord can complicate an easy one. Timing precision depends directly on birth-time precision, because the whole dasha clock starts from the Moon’s nakshatra position at birth.
Antardasha versus mahadasha and pratyantardasha
Mahadasha is the major period (years), antardasha the sub-period (months to a few years), and pratyantardasha the sub-sub-period (weeks to months) used for fine timing. Most practical reading happens at the mahadasha-antardasha level; deeper subdivisions inherit rapidly compounding sensitivity to birth-time error.
