What a kundali actually contains
A kundali (also written kundli, or janam kundali for a birth chart) maps the sky at your birth moment into twelve houses counted from the lagna, the ascendant sign rising on the eastern horizon. Into those houses it places the nine grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — each in a rashi (sign) and a nakshatra (lunar mansion). From the Moon’s nakshatra the chart derives your dasha timeline, the sequence of planetary periods used for timing. A complete kundali is therefore four layers read together: houses for life areas, grahas for drives, nakshatras for texture, and dashas for when.
What you need to generate an accurate kundali
Three inputs decide everything: birth date, birth time, and birth place. Time matters most — the lagna changes roughly every two hours, and a chart cast with the wrong ascendant misreads every house after it. Place fixes the coordinates and timezone used for the calculation. If your recorded birth time is approximate, treat house-level conclusions as provisional, and be wary of any tool that does not state its calculation settings: ayanamsa (Soul Yatri states Lahiri on its chart surfaces), house system, and node model all change the output.
How to read a kundali, in order
A workable first pass: start with the lagna and its lord to understand the chart’s orientation; then read the Moon — its sign, house and nakshatra — for the mind’s ground; then note where each remaining graha sits and which houses it rules; then check the running mahadasha and antardasha to see which of those promises is currently active. Only after that sequence do yogas, divisional charts like the navamsa, and transit overlays add refinement. Reading a single placement in isolation is the most common way charts get misused.
Kundali, kundli, janam kundli: the naming
Kundali and kundli are the same word in different transliterations; janam kundli simply specifies the birth chart. English-language sites also call it a Vedic horoscope or natal chart. Whatever the spelling, the underlying object is identical — a computed chart, not a prediction. The quality difference between tools is never the name; it is whether the calculation settings are disclosed and the interpretation stays honest about uncertainty.
