Before you start: system requirements
Soul Yatri Jyotish is a native desktop app, not a website, so everything — the Soul Yatri Ephemeris, every divisional chart, dashas and reports — runs on your own machine with no internet connection. That keeps your birth data private and the app fast.
The download is small and the installed footprint is modest, so almost any computer from the last decade will run it comfortably. Confirm you are on a supported platform before downloading.
- ◆Windows: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. Roughly 250 MB of free disk space. No administrator rights required — it installs per-user.
- ◆macOS: macOS 12 Monterey or newer on Apple Silicon (M1, M2 or M3). Roughly 250 MB of free disk space.
- ◆Internet: not required after download. The app never phones home and your birth details never leave your device.
Step 1 — download the right installer
Open the Jyotish page on the Soul Yatri site and click the download button that matches your operating system. Windows users receive a .exe installer (around 58 MB); Apple Silicon Mac users receive a .dmg disk image (around 73 MB).
If you are unsure which Mac you have, click the Apple menu and choose "About This Mac" — if the chip line reads Apple M1, M2 or M3, you have an Apple Silicon machine and should take the .dmg. Let the download finish completely before opening it.
Step 2 (Windows) — install past SmartScreen
Double-click the downloaded "Soul-Yatri-Jyotish-x64-setup.exe". Windows may show a blue dialog that reads "Windows protected your PC". This is Microsoft SmartScreen, and it appears for any new independent application that has not yet been signed with a paid (and expensive) code-signing certificate. It is a reputation prompt, not a virus warning — nothing has flagged the file as malware.
To continue, click the small "More info" link in the dialog. A "Run anyway" button appears. Click it, and the installer proceeds normally. The app installs into your user profile, so no administrator password is needed.
After the first launch, SmartScreen learns the app and stops prompting. If you prefer extra assurance, you can scan the installer with your antivirus or check it on a service like VirusTotal before clicking "Run anyway".
- ◆See "Windows protected your PC"? Click "More info", then "Run anyway".
- ◆No "More info" link visible? Your window may be too small — resize it, or it is hidden under the bold heading text.
- ◆Still blocked by a corporate policy? Ask your IT administrator to allow the file, or right-click the .exe → Properties → tick "Unblock" → Apply.
Step 3 (macOS) — install past Gatekeeper
Double-click the downloaded .dmg to mount it, then drag the Soul Yatri Jyotish icon onto the Applications folder shortcut in the window. Eject the disk image when the copy finishes.
The first time you open the app, macOS Gatekeeper may say the app "cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" or that Apple "could not verify it is free of malware". Do not drag it to the Trash. Instead, right-click (or Control-click) the app icon in Applications and choose "Open" from the menu, then confirm "Open" in the dialog. This one-time override tells Gatekeeper you trust the app, and it launches normally every time afterwards.
On macOS Sequoia and later, the right-click "Open" option may not appear immediately. In that case, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the Security section, and click "Open Anyway" next to the Soul Yatri Jyotish message that appears there after your first launch attempt.
- ◆Always use right-click → "Open" for the first launch — double-clicking alone can leave you stuck on the warning.
- ◆No "Open" option? Use System Settings → Privacy & Security → "Open Anyway".
- ◆Quarantine still blocking it? In Terminal you can run: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Soul Yatri Jyotish.app"
Why these prompts appear (and why they are safe)
Both SmartScreen and Gatekeeper are reputation systems. Microsoft and Apple offer code-signing and notarisation that, for a yearly fee, attach a verified publisher identity to an app so these prompts never show. Soul Yatri Jyotish is free, independent software, so it currently ships without that paid signature — which is exactly why a first-run warning appears.
The warnings describe the absence of a paid certificate, not the presence of anything harmful. The app is fully offline, sends no data anywhere, and is built from the public source on the project repository, so you can verify exactly what it does.
Step 4 — first launch and updates
On first launch the app opens to the dashboard and is ready to cast a chart immediately — there is no account to create and nothing to activate. Your saved charts and preferences live in your user profile and stay on your machine.
To update later, download the newest installer from the same Jyotish page and run it over the top; your saved charts and settings are preserved. To uninstall on Windows, use "Add or remove programs"; on macOS, drag the app from Applications to the Trash.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the SmartScreen "Windows protected your PC" warning a virus alert?
- No. SmartScreen shows that warning for any new app that has not built up reputation with a paid code-signing certificate. It is not reporting malware. Click "More info" then "Run anyway" to install. You can scan the file with your antivirus first if you want extra peace of mind.
- macOS says the app is from an unidentified developer — what do I do?
- Right-click (Control-click) the app in your Applications folder and choose "Open", then confirm. This one-time Gatekeeper override authorises the app. If the "Open" option is missing, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway".
- Do I need administrator rights to install on Windows?
- No. The Windows installer is per-user and installs into your own profile, so it does not require an administrator password. On managed work computers, a security policy may still block unknown apps — in that case ask IT to allow it.
- Is there an Intel Mac version?
- The current macOS build targets Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3). If you are on an Intel Mac, use the Windows build on a PC, or run Windows via a virtual machine, until an Intel build is published.
- Will installing collect or upload any of my data?
- No. The app runs entirely offline. It does not require an account, does not transmit your birth details, and stores your charts and settings locally on your device.
