Rahu Mahadasha

Rahu mahadasha is a major timing period where hunger, ambition, disruption, foreignness, and obsession become central. The result depends on Rahu's dignity, house ownership, placement, aspects, yogas, and antardashas.

Main themes

During Rahu mahadasha, life often asks for more conscious engagement with hunger, ambition, disruption, foreignness, and obsession. The period is not automatically good or bad; it activates the planet's promise in the chart.

How long Rahu mahadasha lasts

Rahu mahadasha runs for 18 years. Vimshottari divides a 120-year cycle between the nine grahas in a fixed order and fixed lengths — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — and those nine add to exactly 120. In the sequence Rahu follows Mars and is followed by Jupiter. Everyone moves through the same order; what differs is where a chart starts and how long the first, partial period runs.

What starts a Rahu mahadasha

Your starting point is set by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Rahu lords Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha, so a Moon in any of those three begins life in Rahu mahadasha — usually part-way through it, since only the unspent balance at birth is counted. Because the whole sequence is anchored to the Moon's nakshatra, an inaccurate birth time shifts every subsequent dasha date, which is why dasha predictions are only as good as the birth time behind them.

Antardasha: the sub-periods inside

Each mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas, one for every graha, running in the same fixed order and proportioned to their years. Inside Rahu's 18-year period the Rahu/Rahu antardasha comes first, then Rahu/Jupiter, and so on. This is why a single mahadasha rarely feels uniform — the sub-lord changes the tone, and a difficult mahadasha with a supportive antardasha (or the reverse) is the normal case rather than the exception.

Rahu antardasha durations in full

Each antardasha lasts (mahadasha years x sub-lord years) / 120, so inside Rahu's 18 years the nine run: Rahu/Rahu 2y 8m, Rahu/Jupiter 2y 5m, Rahu/Saturn 2y 10m, Rahu/Mercury 2y 7m, Rahu/Ketu 1y 1m, Rahu/Venus 3y, Rahu/Sun 11m, Rahu/Moon 1y 6m, Rahu/Mars 1y 1m. Those nine add back to 18 years exactly — that is the arithmetic check on any dasha table. Durations here are the classical lengths; the actual calendar dates depend on the unspent balance of your first mahadasha at birth, which is why two people in the same mahadasha are rarely in the same antardasha.

What changes the result

Read Rahu's sign, house, nakshatra, yogas, and relationship with the lagna lord. Antardashas shift the period's tone and timing.
