How long Moon mahadasha lasts
Moon mahadasha runs for 10 years. Vimshottari divides a 120-year cycle between the nine grahas in a fixed order and fixed lengths — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — and those nine add to exactly 120. In the sequence Moon follows Sun and is followed by Mars. Everyone moves through the same order; what differs is where a chart starts and how long the first, partial period runs.
What starts a Moon mahadasha
Your starting point is set by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Moon lords Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, so a Moon in any of those three begins life in Moon mahadasha — usually part-way through it, since only the unspent balance at birth is counted. Because the whole sequence is anchored to the Moon's nakshatra, an inaccurate birth time shifts every subsequent dasha date, which is why dasha predictions are only as good as the birth time behind them.
Antardasha: the sub-periods inside
Each mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas, one for every graha, running in the same fixed order and proportioned to their years.
