Shadbala means "six strengths", a classical system for scoring how much power a graha can express in a chart. Rather than eyeballing whether a planet looks strong, shadbala assigns numeric strength across six sources: sthana bala (positional strength from sign and dignity), dig bala (directional strength from the house it occupies), kala bala (temporal strength from time of birth, including day or night and the year lord), cheshta bala (motional strength, tied to a planet’s apparent speed and retrogression), naisargika bala (the fixed natural strength order of the grahas), and drik bala (aspectual strength from the aspects it receives). The six are summed and compared against a required minimum for each planet.
Strong is not the same as good
The most common misreading of shadbala is treating a high score as good news. Strength measures how forcefully a graha can act, not whether it acts for you. A powerful but ill-placed malefic can express its difficulty more forcefully, while a gently placed benefic with a modest score can still deliver kindly. Shadbala answers "how loudly can this planet speak?" not "will it say something you want to hear?" You read it alongside house rulership, dignity and dasha, never on its own.
How it is used in practice
Few people compute shadbala by hand now; software returns the six components and totals in seconds. In practice astrologers use it to break ties: when two grahas both promise a result, the one with more relevant strength is likelier to deliver, and a planet below its required strength is read as struggling to fulfil its promise. Treat the numbers as one input among several, not a verdict. A chart is a reflective framework, and a strength score is a tool inside it, not a scientific measurement of your life.
