Saturn Mahadasha

Saturn mahadasha is a major timing period where discipline, duty, time, endurance, and accountability become central. The result depends on Saturn's dignity, house ownership, placement, aspects, yogas, and antardashas.

Main themes

During Saturn mahadasha, life often asks for more conscious engagement with discipline, duty, time, endurance, and accountability. The period is not automatically good or bad; it activates the planet's promise in the chart.

How long Saturn mahadasha lasts

Saturn mahadasha runs for 19 years. Vimshottari divides a 120-year cycle between the nine grahas in a fixed order and fixed lengths — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — and those nine add to exactly 120. In the sequence Saturn follows Jupiter and is followed by Mercury. Everyone moves through the same order; what differs is where a chart starts and how long the first, partial period runs.

What starts a Saturn mahadasha

Your starting point is set by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Saturn lords Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada, so a Moon in any of those three begins life in Saturn mahadasha — usually part-way through it, since only the unspent balance at birth is counted. Because the whole sequence is anchored to the Moon's nakshatra, an inaccurate birth time shifts every subsequent dasha date, which is why dasha predictions are only as good as the birth time behind them.

Antardasha: the sub-periods inside

Each mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas, one for every graha, running in the same fixed order and proportioned to their years. Inside Saturn's 19-year period the Saturn/Saturn antardasha comes first, then Saturn/Mercury, and so on. This is why a single mahadasha rarely feels uniform — the sub-lord changes the tone, and a difficult mahadasha with a supportive antardasha (or the reverse) is the normal case rather than the exception.

Saturn antardasha durations in full

Each antardasha lasts (mahadasha years x sub-lord years) / 120, so inside Saturn's 19 years the nine run: Saturn/Saturn 3y, Saturn/Mercury 2y 8m, Saturn/Ketu 1y 1m, Saturn/Venus 3y 2m, Saturn/Sun 11m, Saturn/Moon 1y 7m, Saturn/Mars 1y 1m, Saturn/Rahu 2y 10m, Saturn/Jupiter 2y 6m. Those nine add back to 19 years exactly — that is the arithmetic check on any dasha table. Durations here are the classical lengths; the actual calendar dates depend on the unspent balance of your first mahadasha at birth, which is why two people in the same mahadasha are rarely in the same antardasha.

What changes the result

Read Saturn's sign, house, nakshatra, yogas, and relationship with the lagna lord. Antardashas shift the period's tone and timing.
