A practical framework for campus wellbeing, access, and clear support routes
What campus counselling usually has to cover
Student demand rarely arrives as one clean category. In Indian institutions it tends to cluster around exam and placement pressure, course or career doubt after a stream was chosen by someone else, homesickness and hostel adjustment in the first year, relationship and family conflict, sleep that has collapsed around deadlines, and financial strain that students often will not name directly. A workable programme has to hold ordinary stress and the occasional serious presentation without treating them identically.
What to ask any counselling provider before signing
These questions are worth asking of us and of anyone else you evaluate. Who actually delivers the sessions, and what are their qualifications and registration? What is the escalation path when a student discloses risk, and who on campus is informed and when? What exactly is shared with the institution — aggregate usage, or anything identifiable? Where is session data stored, for how long, and who can access it? What are the counsellor-to-student ratio and the realistic wait time in peak weeks? Is support available in the languages your students actually think in? A provider who cannot answer these plainly in writing is not ready to hold student disclosures.
Confidentiality, safeguarding, and the limits of a programme
Students use a service they trust, so confidentiality boundaries should be stated to them in plain language at intake rather than buried in a policy — including the specific circumstances in which confidentiality would be broken. A campus programme is also not an emergency service and should never be presented as one. In India, 112 is the emergency number, and Tele-MANAS offers 24x7 mental-health support on 14416 and 1-800-891-4416. Any proposal should state where the programme stops and how a student reaches acute care, and that path should be written down before launch rather than improvised during a crisis.
