Zodiac signs and dates

The tropical zodiac has twelve equal signs, beginning with Aries at the March equinox. The dates below are the conventional calendar ranges. If your birthday sits on a boundary, calculate the chart for your exact birth time and place instead of guessing from a date list.

These are conventional tropical ranges, not astronomical constellation dates. A one-day boundary difference across references usually reflects the Sun’s exact ingress time in a particular year and timezone.

Sign, rashi, and constellation are different coordinates

The tropical zodiac anchors Aries to the March equinox and divides the ecliptic into twelve equal 30-degree signs. A sidereal zodiac uses a star-referenced offset. Jyotish usually works sidereally, with an ayanamsa defining that offset.

Astronomical constellations are unequal areas with formal sky boundaries. The Sun therefore spends unequal time in them; they are not interchangeable with twelve equal astrological signs.

Zodiac sign FAQ

What are the dates for the 12 zodiac signs?
The commonly used tropical ranges run from Aries on 21 March through Pisces ending on 20 March. The exact moment when the Sun changes signs can move by a day depending on the year and timezone, so a birth chart is better for a boundary date.
What does it mean to be born on a zodiac cusp?
A cusp means your birthday falls near the usual boundary between two Sun signs. It does not make the Sun occupy two signs at once. Your exact birth date, time, place, and the zodiac system used determine its position.
Is a Western Sun sign the same as a Vedic rashi?
No. Most popular Western sign dates refer to the Sun in the tropical zodiac. Vedic Jyotish commonly uses a sidereal zodiac, and rashi often refers to the Moon sign. The two labels can therefore differ for the same person.
Are zodiac signs the same as astronomical constellations?
No. Astrological signs divide the zodiac into twelve equal sections. Astronomical constellations have unequal, formally defined boundaries, so the Sun does not spend the same amount of time in each constellation.

Near a boundary? A date list is not enough.

A tropical chart needs the birth year, time, and place. Soul Yatri's Kundali uses the sidereal Vedic zodiac, so use it for rashi and lagna rather than to settle a tropical Sun-sign cusp.
