True node vs Mean node — which should I pick?

Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes) can be calculated two ways. They differ by up to ~1.6°, which is why two software sometimes place Rahu/Ketu in a different degree, sign, or divisional chart. Pick the one your astrologer or almanac uses.

True node (Sayana/Spashta) — default

  • The actual, instantaneous position of the nodes (accounts for the Moon’s real motion).
  • Astronomically accurate; matches Parashara’s Light, Jagannatha Hora, and drik / observational panchang.
  • Best for precise transit and divisional (D10, D9…) work.
  • Trade-off: it can wobble slightly and briefly appear direct.

Mean node (Madhya)

  • The smoothed, averaged node position; always retrograde with uniform motion.
  • Matches many traditional panchangs/almanacs and older Indian software (e.g. AstroSage default).
  • Steady and predictable — no oscillation.
  • Trade-off: up to ~1.6° away from the true astronomical position.

Tip: comparing with Parashara’s Light or DrikPanchang → choose True node. Comparing with a traditional almanac or AstroSage default → choose Mean node.

Frequently asked questions

Does kundli matching matter for a love marriage?
Many couples still check Gun Milan for reassurance and to understand strengths and friction points. A lower score doesn’t forbid marriage — it highlights areas to be mindful of.
What if our gunas are low?
Low gunas point to areas needing understanding, not a verdict. Classical cancellations and remedies exist; consult a qualified astrologer for a full chart review.
Is it free?
Yes — free, instant, and private.
